Animal Assisted Interventions

Animal-Assisted interventions (AAIs) is an umbrella term that encompasses various approaches, including Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT), Animal Assisted Activities (AAA), and interventions like Animal-Assisted Crisis Response (AACR). These methods intentionally incorporate animals into health, education, and human services to achieve therapeutic gains and enhance overall wellness. AAIs contribute to individuals’ well-being by supporting physical health and improving cognitive, emotional-affective, and social aspects, ultimately leading to enhanced emotional well-being, reduced anxiety, and lower stress levels.

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is a structured goal-directed treatment approach that incorporates animals into a patient's care plan to promote emotional, social, and physical well-being. Common AAT includes trained therapy animals, often dogs, to improve social skills, motivation, and reduce stress. In addition to AAT, Animal Assisted Activities can enhance the therapeutic process by providing additional support and comfort. Furthermore, Animal Assisted Crisis Response can be instrumental during challenging times, helping individuals cope with stress and anxiety.

Participation: Animals can make treatment more enjoyable and less stressful, improving participation.

Emotional well-being: AAT can reduce anxiety, ease stress, and enhance overall emotional well-being.

Physical benefits: May lower blood pressure, improve cardiovascular health, decrease physical pain, and improve pain management.

Motivation: Motivates patients to engage more actively in their recovery and rehabilitation.

Rigorous screening: Therapy animals undergo a rigorous screening process, including behavioral training and certification, to ensure they are suitable for the hospital or clinical environment.

Animal Assisted Activities (AAA) is a goal-oriented, informal interaction and visitation facilitated by a human-animal team, aimed at providing motivational, educational, and recreational benefits to enhance a person's quality of life. These Animal Assisted Activities can significantly enhance quality of life by offering positive interactions that reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve mood and overall well-being. The activities are conducted by a human-animal team, which may include volunteers, paraprofessionals, or professionals who have received introductory training and have been assessed for suitability. Additionally, AAA increases social skills by promoting social interaction and boosting participation in group activities. Through bonding and communication, sessions can involve both verbal and non-verbal communication activities with the animal, along with sensory relief from touching and petting. Furthermore, the principles of Animal-Assisted Therapy can be integrated into these activities, providing therapeutic benefits. In certain contexts, Animal Assisted Crisis Response may also play a role in offering support during challenging times.

Animal Assisted Crisis Response (AACR)

Animal Assisted Crisis Response (AACR) is a specialized form of Animal Assisted Activities (AAA) where highly trained animal-handler teams are deployed to provide comfort and emotional support to people impacted by environmental disasters, human-caused crises, or traumatic events. These teams work in conjunction with crisis response professionals, such as counselors and other disaster mental health volunteers, to enhance their efforts. Comprising specially trained and credentialed animal-handler teams, AACR is prepared to operate in chaotic and emotionally charged environments. The benefits of Animal-Assisted Therapy in these situations may help reduce stress, provide comfort and distractions from initial trauma, promote healing, and enhance social connections for those affected by a traumatic event. Furthermore, these teams also support first responders by offering stress management and emotional support for emergency personnel, including police, firefighters, and medical staff, before, during, or after traumatic events.
